Grid operator TenneT has increased offshore wind capacity to 6,232 megawatts (MW) in 2018, thus closing in on the 2020 government target of 6,500 MW. 鈥淎lready this year, TenneT will exceed this goal since the completion of BorWin3 in the course of 2019 will put a total of 7,132 megawatts of transmission capacity into operation in the North Sea alone,鈥 said TenneT managing director Wilfried Breuer . The company transmitted a record 16.75 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity from the North Sea to land in 2018, an increase of around five percent over 2017 and equal to the annual consumption of more than five million German households. An additional 2.35 TWh were 鈥渉arvested鈥 in the Baltic Sea, which is not part of TenneT鈥檚 grid area, bringing Germany鈥檚 offshore total to 19.1 TWh.
