Germany must raise climate ambitions ahead of UN summit - researchers and climate NGOs

Germany has to step up its climate ambitions so Chancellor Angela Merkel doesn鈥檛 travel to the UN Climate Action Summit in New York on 23 September empty-handed, according to Climate Transparency, an international partnership of climate research organisations and NGOs. The group is calling for the country to adopt a climate action law that ramps up the current 2030 CO2 reduction target of minus 55 percent, phases out coal by 2030 at the latest, and implements a CO2 price of at least 50 euros in transport and heating. Additionally, Germany should introduce mandatory climate-related risk disclosures for assets in the finance and real economy by 2020.

鈥淭he chancellor shouldn鈥檛 travel to New York empty-handed, but with concrete proposals,鈥 said Christoph Bals, policy director at NGO Germanwatch, which is part of the Climate Transparency Network. UN Secretary General Ant贸nio Guterres has called on all countries to bring concrete solutions to the summit.

Climate Transparency says it provides concrete country recommendations for more climate action to stimulate the national debate. The recommendations are based on the organisation鈥檚 Brown to Green Report, which evaluates the G20 countries鈥 individual transition to a low-carbon economy.
