Austria and Germany want EU to keep out of national forest policy

The European Union鈥檚聽聽should 鈥渕eaningfully flank and complement鈥 the forest policies of the member states but not replace them, the agriculture ministers of Germany and Austria have said in a聽. Julian Kl枚ckner (Germany) and Elisabeth K枚stinger (Austria) said they 鈥渟trongly reject鈥 the current proposals by the European Commission 鈥渢o take over the planning sovereignty for forests鈥, including binding rules for the member states. Kl枚ckner said Germany has launched a 1.5 billion euro support programme to make forests more climate change resilient, help with climate protection and increase biodiversity. 鈥淚t makes sense to support this approach with a strategy on EU level, but we don鈥檛 need more red tape from Brussels,鈥 she said, adding that it would be 鈥渄etrimental to acceptance鈥 if the Commission were to decide over the heads of local experts.聽
The European Commission published its 鈥溾 in July 2021, calling it one of the flagship initiatives of the聽聽and saying it builds on the聽聽The strategy proposes actions for improving the quantity and quality of EU forests and also for achieving the bloc鈥檚 greenhouse gas emission reduction target of at least 55 percent by 2030 and climate neutrality by 2050.
