German automaker VW will not start its own e-car battery cell production because the company believes it would be too expensive. 鈥淭hat would be a joke,鈥� said VW CEO Matthias M眉ller after months of speculation on the issue, according to German news agency dpa. He said the company was studying batteries鈥� entire production chain and would probably announce by the end of this year how to deal with the issue.

Climate Transparency
The Group of Twenty (G20) is 鈥渂eginning to head in the right direction鈥� towards a low-carbon economy but needs to step up its efforts to meet the Paris Agreement鈥檚 temperature goals, according to a report by Climate Transparency, the international consortium of environmental organisations. Coal emerged as a main issue because 鈥渁 large number of planned new coal-fired power plants [鈥 would almost double the G20鈥檚 coal capacity鈥�, leading to more emissions, the organisation says in a press release. In terms of investment attractiveness, Germany leads the list, but its position could be endangered by the recent renewables law reform that puts a cap on renewables growth, says the report.

But policymakers鈥� use of the surcharge as a 鈥榩rice tag鈥� for Germany鈥檚 energy transition is inappropriate because renewable payments are only one factor determining the surcharge. A rise in the surcharge does not necessarily indicate rising costs of renewable development, nor does it automatically imply rising power bills. 鈥淭he renewable energy surcharge is in no way suitable as an indicator to evaluate policy options.鈥� Next year鈥檚 renewable surcharge will be announced in mid-October, according to the article.
