Unusually early heatwave fans talk of climate crisis in Germany

S眉ddeutsche Zeitung / 威力彩玩法

A heatwave with temperatures expected to rise to around 40掳 Celsius has fanned calls for more climate action in Germany, in an echo of聽last year鈥檚 extremely hot and dry summer. 鈥淚n contrast to earlier extreme events, the experts鈥 judgement is clear: this is a sign of climate change,鈥 writes Marlene Wei脽 in an article in the S眉ddeutsche Zeitung entitled 鈥淚n the oven.鈥 The heatwave is unusual not only because of the extreme temperatures, but also because it arrives at the beginning of the summer, according to Wei脽. Meterological forecasts say that heat records for the month of June could be broken across the country.
鈥淭his increase in heat extremes corresponds exactly to what was predicted by climate scientists as a consequence of global warming,鈥 according to Stefan Rahmstorf,聽co-chair of Earth System Analysis at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK). 鈥淥nly a rapid reduction of fossil fuel use and a corresponding cut in CO2聽emissions can prevent a disastrous further increase of weather extremes.鈥

Last year, a prolonged drought and record-breaking temperatures in August聽significantly increased public pressure聽for more climate action in Germany. Countless media reports invoked the extreme weather as a harbinger of the country鈥檚 future if governments 鈥 including Germany鈥檚 鈥 fail to immediately curb carbon emissions. A聽large majority of the population said they believed the hot weather was a result of climate change.
