Grand coalition energy experts reject Greens' coal exit plans
Energy experts of Germany鈥檚 grand coalition of conservatives (CDU/CSU) and Social Democrats (SPD) have rebuffed the Green Party鈥檚 plans for an accelerated coal exit. 鈥淲e cannot phase out both nuclear and coal-fired power production within 15 or 20 years,鈥 conservative Thomas Barei脽 said at a party debate hosted by utilities RWE and innogy. Barei脽 argued that exiting coal 鈥渨ith a sledgehammer-approach鈥 would 鈥渕assively damage鈥 Germany鈥檚 industrial capacity and undermine the 鈥渂asis of our prosperity鈥. The SPD鈥檚 Bernd Westphal said his party would put 鈥渘o signature鈥 under a hypothetical coalition treaty with the Greens that included an accelerated coal exit. Westphal said the energy transition affected 鈥渁 very diverse array of interests鈥 and limiting debate to climate protection was 鈥渨rong鈥. The Green Party鈥檚 Julia Verlinden said accelerating Germany鈥檚 coal exit was 鈥渁 red line鈥 for her party as 鈥渢here is simply no other way to meet our climate goals鈥. She rejected the other parties鈥 insistence on a market-based approach for exiting coal as 鈥渢here is no market because carbon emission costs are not internalised鈥. Verlinden added that a coal exit was inevitable and taking action now would 鈥渋ncrease our flexibility and allow for better adaptation鈥 by affected industries. In their draft election programme, the Greens envisage a coal exit by 2030.
