Industry criticises German government for delayed introduction of smart meters

Handelsblatt

The Association of Energy Market Innovators (BNE), a lobby group of grid-independent energy suppliers in Germany, has criticised the German government for the stalled introduction of smart electricity meters in the country, Klaus Stratmann writes in the Handelsblatt. The certification procedure for smart meters had 鈥渟tructural problems鈥 that posed 鈥渉igh expectations by policymakers of the security level of intelligent metering systems,鈥 while 鈥渓acking regulations on the timeframe and on costs.鈥 This had led to 鈥渁n overly complex procedure鈥 that impedes on innovation, the BNE said in a letter addressed to economy and energy minister Peter Altmaier. The lobby group said that Germany鈥檚 Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) should only outline the necessary security standards, which smart meter producers could then certify themselves. On this basis, the industry 鈥渃ould immediately start a comprehensive roll-out of intelligent metering systems at affordable costs,鈥 said BNE head Robert Busch.
