Power prices in Germany may eventually be as much 10 percent higher in Bavaria and Baden-Wuerttemberg if the two southern German states do not get access to cheap windpower from Germany鈥檚 northern coast through two new power lines, magazine Der Spiegel reported, citing a study by the European Commission, the EU鈥檚 executive arm.
Windpower is one of the cheapest sources of power on wholesale power markets as it has zero fuel costs and it benefits from subsidies generated by a levy on the power price. At the same time, many industrial producers are at least partially exempted from the levies.
